Volunteers Beautify Jefferson Boulevard

Over 40 volunteers worked for nearly 3 hours in the heat this past Saturday morning as part of a Jefferson Boulevard beautification project organized by Go Oak Cliff, the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce and City of Dallas District One Council Member Delia Jasso.

As the City of Dallas is preparing for the opening of the new Oak Cliff Cultural Center, located next to the Texas Theatre at 223 West Jefferson Boulevard, city staff lamented the fact that Oncor was going to charge the city quite a bit of money to re-paint 24 light poles near the new center. Council Member Jasso pulled together Go Oak Cliff and the Chamber and a volunteer powered solution was planned.

Go Oak Cliff co-founder Amy Cowan explained that while the majority of the volunteers came from right here in Oak Cliff, not everyone calls Oak Cliff home. “We had several volunteers who used to live in Oak Cliff and have heard about the positive changes taking place – they were so inspired that they came back to volunteer,” said Cowan.

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is scheduled to open on August 12, replacing the Ice House Cultural Center which closed in the Fall of 2009. The Oak Cliff Cultural Center, featuring art gallery and multi-purpose studio space, will continue in the tradition of cultural service that the Ice House Cultural Center started.

Council member Jasso and Dallas Independent School District Board member Eric Cowan were the elected officials on site working alongside the volunteers.

When asked about future volunteering opportunities to beautify Oak Cliff, Cowan said, “We don’t have anything on the calender yet, but once things start cooling off this fall we plan to organize some more cleanup efforts to highlight what a beautiful place Oak Cliff is.”.

We had an incredible turnout at Kidd Springs for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's second visit to the park. Families, neighbors, and more came out in droves to witness the wonderful performance by Dallas' amazing ensemble. My husband Juan and I had the pleasure of performing with the orchestra for Verdi's "Anvil Chorus". Roy Appleton, of the Dallas Morning News posted more about the evening here.
